FOOTNOTES
The Rolex Daytona continues to be among the most sought after of vintage watches on the market today. The bold contrast between the dial colour and the subsidiary dials makes this model instantly recognisable and as such it has long been lauded as a design icon.

In 1969 Rolex replaced the first Oyster Cosmograph 6240 with both the reference 6263 and 6265. Although similar in many aspects, the main differentiating factor between the two new references was the choice of bezel. The 6263 featured a black aluminium insert with printed tachymetre, whereas the 6265, as with the current lot, presented to the market a smooth engraved metal bezel.

Produced in both steel and gold it is believed that over the course its production of 20 years no more than 2000 pieces were made in gold making the current lot a rare example to come by.

FOOTNOTES
First appearing in the early 1960s, this 'exotic' dial manufactured by Singer was renamed the 'Paul Newman' by collectors after the American actor wore the watch in promotional posters for the film 'Winning' and throughout his private life. By sinking the subsidiary dials and outer scale within the opaque black dial background, the dial achieves an unusual three-dimensionality and an instantly recognisable look. As such the Paul Newman has earned its place among the most coveted watches for collectors around the world.

The current lot has been in the same family since it was purchased. Last serviced by Boodle & Dunthorne in 1992.

FOOTNOTES
Arguably no other watch has ever captured the imagination of the collector's world in the same way that the Paul Newman Rolex Daytona has. In recent years this model in all its different incarnations has built up an almost mythical reputation. With its iconic design and the photos on Paul Newman's wrist the exotic Daytona dial truly represents the dream of watch collecting.

The present lot is an honest example and embodies all things desirable in a Paul Newman, from the excellent original pushers to the beautifully preserved silvered dial.
Incidentally, this watch also happens to tell a story which is revealed through a special engraving to the case back. The words read, faded with wear through the years "LOVE CONQUERS TIME", a statement of defiance in all capital letters, an anonymous engraving and a story lost in the folds of time which is sure to grow a new personal meaning in the imagination of each person who sees it. It is this mixture of history and hidden romance, reverie and undebatable coolness that elevates this piece from the extra-ordinary to a true holy grail.

This watch has been in private hands and was a gift to the present owner.
