Sinn 717 and Sinn 1739 Ag B receive design awards

Sinn Spezialuhren, manufacturer of high-quality mechanical watches, now has two more awards to its name. A Sinn Spezialuhren watch has won the iF Design Award 2022 for the first time this year: the 717 now joins the list of award winners from the world-renowned designer. The 1739 Ag B claimed the Red Dot Award in the category ‘Product Design 2022’.

iF Design Award 2022 for the 717

As a cockpit wristwatch, the 717 impressed the 132-person jury with its successful synthesis of historical style and modern interpretation. We are particularly delighted to win this, as it is the first time for a watch from Sinn Spezialuhren to receive this prestigious award having succeeded in meeting the stringent evaluation criteria. Unlike other awards, the iF Design Award chooses the winning products based on five criteria: Idea, Form, Function, Differentiation and Impact. These categories are used to form a points system. Sinn Spezialuhren scored 300 out of a possible 500 points with its 717 model. The award goes to a watch which took inspiration from the historic Nabo 17 ZM cockpit clock in terms of design, form and function. Originally designed for the German Luftwaffe’s Tornado programme in the late 1970s, the Nabo 17 ZM was a cockpit clock with a central minute counter. The challenge for Sinn Spezialuhren was in translating this classic design into a wristwatch format suitable for everyday use. With this in mind, the 717 model features a central stopwatch display for seconds and minutes in the form of large orange-coloured hands. This was achieved with the SINN chronograph movement SZ01.

Red Dot Award for the 1739 Ag B

Three watches from Sinn Spezialuhren have previously won a Red Dot Award in the ‘Product Design’ category. The latest winner, the 1739 Ag B, has shown its excellent design quality by meeting the strict criteria of the jury. The experts all agreed on one thing: a stylish watch should have a distinctive look combined with a function-orientated design. And this watch certainly follows the idea of combining elegance with suitability for everyday use. A premium appearance is ensured by a blue dial with sunburst decoration, a transparent case back made from sapphire crystal glass, and a classic-style case made from argentium silver alloy with special protection against tarnishing and oxidation. The watch also offers water resistance and pressure resistance of up to 10 bar, thus ensuring the functional reliability that you come to expect from Sinn watches.

Form follows function

For certified engineer Lothar Schmidt, owner of Sinn Spezialuhren, the two awards are confirmation that the principles on which the development and design of Sinn Spezialuhren timepieces are based hold true. ‘We are of the firm belief that form should always follow function in the design of our watches. These awards are further proof that outstanding design quality and uncompromising functionality are mutually dependent rather than mutually exclusive. We’re particularly proud that our 717 has also won the iF Design Award this time.’

Design awards for the highest standards

The Red Dot Award is one of the biggest design competitions in the world. In 2022, designers, design agencies and manufacturers from around 60 countries submitted their products for the award. Following the principle of ‘In search of good design and innovation’, 48 international jury members examined these products expertly, individually and meticulously. Only products with outstanding design quality receive the award. The award-winning companies are thus setting new standards in the design industry with their submissions.

The iF Design Award has been one of the world’s most celebrated names in terms of outstanding design since 1954. The award is presented once a year by the world’s oldest independent design institution, iF International Forum Design GmbH. It is one of the world’s leading design awards and recognises outstanding design across multiple disciplines. There was an extremely large number of applicants in 2022: the jury had to choose from almost 11,000 entries from 57 countries for the coveted seal of approval.
