Certina DS-2 Chronograph Automatic
The new Chronograph from Certina is inspired by a timepiece that was at the height of its time – literally! The predecessor of the DS-2 Chronograph Automatic gave proof of its sterling qualities during a spectacular expedition to Mount Everest. The new model transports this spirit of adventure into the 21st century, with a sporty-elegant vintage design and silicon technology. In this way, traditional savoir-faire is carried over stylishly to the next generation.
“Downhill on Everest“: the historic model
The DS-2 Chronolympic was the epitome of robust resilience and reliable precision. In 1970 it caused a remarkable sensation: five models accompanied a Japanese expedition to the highest peak in the world. And that’s not all. During the descent Yuichiro Miura wore the watch on his wrist as he raced 2,000 metres down the mountain on skis–at speeds up to 160 kilometres an hour. The daring adventure was immortalized in an Oscar-winning documentary, “The Man Who Skied Down Everest”.
A worthy successor: the new DS- Chronograph Automatic
The new DS-2 has nothing to fear from a comparison with its famous predecessor. Its tonneau-shaped case (43.3 mm x 40.5 mm) in stainless steel with yellow gold PVD coating is directly inspired by the 1970s model. The green dial presents the small seconds at 9 o’clock, the 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a date window at 6, and a tachometric scale.
Striking gold coloured indexes and hands coated with Super-LumiNova® complete the high-contrast retro design. The watch is worn with a brown cow leather strap with crocodile imprint. Another option is a model in steel, whose dark blue dial with white, yellow and red accents adds even more colour to the look.
Avant-garde mechanics: automatic winding and silicon hairspring
Ticking inside the watch is a movement that combines traditional mechanical watchmaking and state-of-the-art technologies. The automatic movement has a contemporary power reserve of 68 hours and a hairspring made of silicon.
This innovative high-tech material is not only anti-magnetic and lightweight, but also resistant to corrosion and changes in temperature. This enables the movement to deliver consistent precision and long-term reliability – for the generations of tomorrow.
The new DS-2 Chronograph Automatic will be available from April 2023 at all authorised Certina dealers worldwide.
