Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic & Antarctic Spider 35mm

Nivada Grenchen redefines its classics with the new MINI series in the Antarctic collection. The quintessential Super Antarctic and Antarctic Spider, now elegantly resized to 35mm, have joined the permanent lineup. It’s time to liberate the wrists! As of 2024, watch diameters are melting away faster than our New Year’s resolutions..

Two Bestsellers in a New Size: Both icons of the Antarctic collection are now available in 35mm:

- Super Antarctic 35mm with black dial and beige or white Super-LumiNova® indexes;

- Antarctic Spider 35 mm with gray sector dial and stick indexes – and now also for the very first time with a matte black dial.

  • These aren’t limited editions: both the Super Antarctic and Antarctic Spider 35mm have joined the collection’s permanent line-up.
  • Downsized in diameter – and price: both new watches are priced at 800 Euros, bidding farewell to the era of the oversized and overpriced.

XS Watch, XL Effect, Cool Price

When a new watch model is launched, one critical question arises: What should its diameter be? At Nivada Grenchen, the answer is straightforward: the ideal size is that of the original era. The brand focuses on reissues that respect vintage dimensions and designs with unmatched authenticity.

Nivada Grenchen has downsized the Antarctic collection—not just a pun, but an elegant reality. Guillaume Laidet has shrunk the entire Antarctic collection! The Antarctic Spider and Super Antarctic are now available in 35mm, offering endlessly refined elegance by Nivada Grenchen. Gone are the bulky watches of the 2000s! Today, loud luxury makes way for subtle sophistication, and maximalist style takes a minimalist turn. In the watch world, 35mm is making a strong comeback, with a subtle touch of retro chic that appeals to both nostalgia buffs and neo-vintage enthusiasts.

Landeron 21 - Small movement, not so small Wonder

Thanks to the manually wound Landeron 21 caliber, Nivada Grenchen explores new possibilities in terms of finesse (7mm case thickness, 10.1mm including the crystal) and diameter (35mm). The brand champions the understated and bold looks provided by smaller watches, in contrast to larger, more ostentatious models. The goal is to counter the craze for larger sizes and prices, returning to the essence with an authentic size. With a 35mm diameter, Nivada Grenchen watches are perfect, regardless of your body type.

Antarctic Spider 35mm

Beneath a double-domed sapphire crystal, discover a superb gray or black dial with 8 spider legs in full weave. Eight indexes are applied vertically on a sunray silver or black dial, connected (literally) by 8 lines –that look like spider legs, hence the watch’s sobriquet – converging at the center of the dial.

The Antarctic Spider features a 35mm diameter polished and brushed silver stainless steel case and is 11.1mm thick. Its dial is topped with a sapphire crystal nearly as hard as diamond, protecting it from everyday bumps and scratches. At 3 o’clock, you’ll find a screwed-down crown that controls the three hands of the dial. Its screwed back makes it water-resistant up to 50 meters, or 5 atmospheres. At the 3 o’clock index, there is a date window and the brand’s signature at 9 o’clock.

Super Antarctic 35mm

While the case and crown of the Antarctic are beautifully made, it’s the black dial that’s the hero of this watch. It features indexes filled with either white or cream Super-LumiNova®.

The dial is branded ‘Nivada Aquamatic’ below the 12, and ‘Super Antarctic 18 Rubis’ above the 6. The hands are classic steel style, filled with luminescence. The iconic back is embossed at its center with a stylized penguin on a gold medallion, just like the original piece. Overall, the combination of stylistic elements evokes the 1950s.

The first wristwatch in Antarctica

The first permanent base established by the United States in Antarctica has been in place since the 1950s. Polar explorer Admiral Richard E. Byrd was President Eisenhower’s logical choice to be the commanding officer of Operation Deep Freeze I. On his wrist, a three-hand Nivada Grenchen that would later be named the ANTARCTIC, now reissued in 35mm. A robust watch, shock-resistant and antimagnetic.

The two new timepieces, Antarctic Spider 35mm and Super Antarctic 35mm, will be available for 850 USD / 760 CHF / 800 EUR / 670 GBP, Starting June 26th 2024, exclusively at nivadagrenchenofficial.com.
