The 2021 Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional Master Chronometer

We’re only in January, yet OMEGA is already making one of the biggest watchmaking announcements of 2021. This year, the Speedmaster Moonwatch collection will be updated with its next generation of models. For fans everywhere, it’s a chance to see the latest edition of a muchloved timepiece – including unique touches in design and a powerful Master Chronometer certified anti-magnetic movement.

For the exciting launch, the Swiss watchmaker has taken inspiration from the 4th generation Moonwatch style, commonly referenced as the ST 105.012, and worn by Apollo 11 astronauts on the moon in 1969.

These space-era tributes include the classic asymmetrical case, the step dial, the double bevel caseback, and the famous dot over 90 (DON) and a dot diagonal to 70 on the anodised aluminium bezel ring. Small but important details in the telling of the Speedmaster story.

Perhaps the most significant update comes with the arrival of the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. The new movement ensures that the Moonwatch will now be unaffected by even the most extreme magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss. In addition, it ensures that the entire watch is certified as a Master Chronometer – the highest standard of precision, performance and magneticresistance in the Swiss watch industry.

Around the wrist, OMEGA has made yet more changes. An integrated, fully-brushed bracelet offers a five–arched-links-per-row design. Similar to Moonwatch styles of the past, it includes a new clasp with a polished OMEGA logo on a satin-finished cover.

Even the dial shows the attention-to-detail that OMEGA has committed to this updated collection. In accordance with the Calibre 3861’s frequency, the minute track is now split by 3 divisions, as opposed to the 5 divisions on previous models. Another example of the brand’s exacting standards when it comes to precision.

With so much to explore, it’s now over to eager Moonwatch fans to select their Master Chronometer model from eight special choices, including versions in stainless steel, 18K Sedna™ gold or 18K Canopus gold™. All come with OMEGA’s full 5-year warranty.

It took 4 years of development to produce the next powerful calibre within the Moonwatch family, this time achieving Master Chronometer certification. Released in 2019, the Calibre 3861 has improved the power reserve, chronometric performance and magnetic resistance of the iconic movement, with many innovative features such as OMEGA’s revolutionary Co-Axial escapement as well as the silicon Si14 balance spring, which enable the calibre to pass the 8 Master Chronometer tests.

For this exciting redesign, OMEGA has taken inspiration from the 4th generation Moonwatch style — commonly referenced as the ST 105.012. Highly respected amongst watch collectors, the model is famed as one of the watches worn by Apollo 11 astronauts who landed on the moon in 1969.

Details include:

  • The classic asymmetrical case with twisted lugs, as well as short and wide pushers
  • The step dial in black
  • The double bevel caseback
  • The domed minute and seconds chronograph hands, which follow the bevel of the step dial
  • The famous dot over 90 (DON) and a dot diagonal to 70 on the anodised aluminium bezel ring

In today’s modern world, magnetism has become a serious threat to the performance of the watches we wear. Technology such as phones, tablets, laptops and even hairdryers can permanently throw a timepiece out of rhythm. The new Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 ensures that the legendary Moonwatch is unaffected by even the most extreme magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss (the same level as a typical MRI scanner). Amongst the movement’s many benefits are the inclusions of non-ferrous materials, such as the Si14 balance spring, which keeps the heart of the watch protected at all times.

With the incredible upgrade of the Calibre 3861, the Speedmaster Moonwatch is now Master Chronometer certified, guaranteeing the highest standard of precision, chronometric performance and anti-magnetism in the industry. To achieve the mark, every single Moonwatch will undergo eight rigorous tests before it leaves the OMEGA factory. Overseen by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), these tests will give each customer the confidence that the Speedmaster on their wrist has been thoroughly proven in the strictest environment, and will serve them faithfully for their very own missions – whether it’s on the moon or closer to home.

A very subtle change can be found on the Moonwatch’s new minute track. Each second is now split by 3 divisions in accordance with the Calibre 3861’s frequency. Another example of OMEGA’s exacting standards when it comes to precision.

Around the wrist, OMEGA has integrated a fully-brushed bracelet with a five–archedlinks-per-row design. This was the same design used for the recent Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition watch. Even the clasp is new, with a polished OMEGA logo on a satin-finished cover. Beautifully refined with a width of 15mm, it also includes two polished pushers in a new oval shape.

The Speedmaster Moonwatch is one of the world’s most iconic timepieces. Having been a part of all six moon landings, the legendary chronograph is an impressive representation of the brand’s adventurous pioneering spirit.

The watch is driven by the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, which powers the small seconds sub-dial, 30-minute recorder and 12-hour recorder, along with the central chronograph function.

Backed by OMEGA’s five-year warranty, eight 42 mm models will be available to customers in the Speedmaster Moonwatch collection. The 18k Sedna™ gold and 18k Canopus gold™ models will be available only at Omega boutiques.
